Ford Motor Company has officially announced its return to the top tier of endurance racing. In 2027, Ford Performance will enter the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) with a full factory Hypercar program — and a clear goal: win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
This marks Ford’s first return to the top class at Le Mans since its iconic streak of four overall victories from 1966 to 1969. It’s not just a comeback; it’s a bold statement from a brand with a deep, personal connection to one of motorsport’s most grueling and prestigious races.
Reigniting a Legendary Rivalry
Ford’s return to Le Mans will bring a fresh chapter to its legendary history — one that famously includes beating Ferrari in the 1960s. The company last claimed a major victory at Le Mans in 2016, taking first in the GTE-Pro class with the Ford GT on the 50th anniversary of its historic 1966 win.
Now, the Blue Oval is aiming for the overall win once more.
“We are entering a new era for performance and racing at Ford,” said Bill Ford, Executive Chair of Ford Motor Company. “When we race, we race to win. And there is no track or race that means more to our history than Le Mans. It is where we took on Ferrari and won in the 1960s. It is where we returned 50 years later and shocked the world and beat Ferrari again.”
Ford’s 2027 Hypercar will compete alongside some of the biggest manufacturers in motorsports — including Ferrari, Toyota, Porsche, and Peugeot — in what many are calling a new golden age of endurance racing.
“I am thrilled that we’re going back to Le Mans and competing at the highest level of endurance racing,” added Bill Ford. “We are ready to once again challenge the world, and ‘go like hell!’”
Endurance Racing’s Golden Era
With at least ten major OEMs committed to the 2027 season, the FIA WEC is experiencing a surge in popularity and manufacturer investment. Ford’s arrival further solidifies the championship’s elite status and the enduring appeal of Le Mans.
“Ford has been synonymous with success both on and off-track for decades,” said Frédéric Lequien, CEO of the FIA World Endurance Championship. “We are delighted that the company has chosen the FIA World Endurance Championship for its latest challenge.”
“To have at least ten major automotive brands committed to the series’ top-tier in 2027 is testament to the championship’s stellar momentum and growth.”
Ford’s participation underscores the strength of the Hypercar regulations, which have attracted a wide array of brands due to their blend of advanced technology, design freedom, and brand marketing potential.
“Ford and endurance racing are a perfect fit, as has been proven time and again,” said Richard Mille, President of the FIA Endurance Commission. “It is a brand with a long and proud motorsport heritage, and a passion for competition instilled by Henry Ford himself.”
“The company’s return to the highest level of the discipline is further validation of the success and appeal of the current Hypercar regulations. Endurance racing’s golden age is right here, and right now!”
Looking Ahead
Ford has yet to unveil details about the car or driver lineup, but its intention is clear: take the fight to the front of the field. With its track record in motorsports and a legacy forged in endurance racing glory, Ford’s 2027 campaign promises to be one of the most anticipated stories in international motorsport.
